Fitting & Follow-Up Process

Denture care at our Erina clinic begins with a one-on-one consultation where we assess the condition of your mouth and discuss your treatment requirements. We take impressions using standard clinical materials, record your bite and gather any measurements required for accurate fitting. Dentures are then fabricated onsite by qualified technicians, allowing for greater control over adjustments and delivery timeframes. For implant-retained dentures, we coordinate with your dental implant provider to ensure a compatible final fit.

Reline and repair services are also completed onsite, with same-day turnaround often available depending on the complexity of the case. We use durable, clinically approved materials for every appliance. Throughout the process, patients are kept informed of timeframes, costs and care instructions. Our Erina team provides post-fitting checks and adjustments where required, and all services are supported with clear advice tailored to each person’s denture use and maintenance.

All You Need To Know

  • What is the difference between full and partial dentures?

The main difference between full and partial dentures lies in how many natural teeth the patient still has. Full dentures are used when all teeth in a dental arch (either the upper or lower jaw) are missing. These rest directly on the gums and are custom-made to match the shape and size of the patient’s mouth. Full dentures may be either conventional (fitted after the gums have healed following extraction) or immediate (placed right after teeth are removed).

Partial dentures, on the other hand, are used when some natural teeth remain. These dentures consist of one or more replacement teeth fixed to a gum-coloured base, often supported by a metal or flexible framework. They are designed to fill in the spaces left by missing teeth while helping to keep the remaining natural teeth from shifting out of position. Both types of dentures are custom-made, but partial dentures must be designed to work in harmony with existing teeth and bite patterns.

  • How long do dentures last?

On average, dentures last between 5 and 10 years, depending on how well they are maintained and how much the patient’s mouth changes over time. While the denture materials themselves are durable, changes in the shape of the gums and jawbone—known as bone resorption—can affect how well the denture fits. Over time, this can lead to looseness, discomfort or difficulty with chewing and speaking.

To address these issues, dentures may require relines (where the internal surface of the denture is reshaped to improve fit), repairs (to fix cracks, breaks or worn components), or full replacement. Good oral hygiene, regular check-ups and careful handling of the denture can help extend its lifespan. Patients should avoid using very hot water, abrasive brushes or bleach-based cleaners, as these can damage the material and reduce the denture’s durability.

  • Can I wear dentures while exercising?

Yes, dentures can typically be worn during exercise, including walking, gym workouts and light sports activities. However, activities involving heavy movement, impact or rapid breathing may cause dentures—especially full lower dentures—to shift or loosen. This is particularly true if the fit isn’t optimal or if the wearer is still adjusting to new dentures.

If you notice movement during physical activity, consider using a denture adhesive for added security. For higher-impact sports or contact activities, a custom mouthguard is more appropriate and should be worn instead of dentures to avoid breakage or injury. Always consult your dental professional if you experience discomfort or instability during exercise.
